Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Saturday, Aug. 31: At 2:03 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 4:18 pm a deputy and the Scranton fire department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1100 block of State St in Scranton. At 7:47 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Churdan.Friday, Aug. 30: At 2:02 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with two arrests in the 200 block of W. Adams St. At 5:12 am a deputy assisted with getting horses back in the fence on County Road E-18 (130th St) near S Ave in Paton Township. At 7 pm a deputy arrested Melynda Weltha, 43, of Grand Junction for driving while revoked and a no contact violation*.
Thursday, Aug. 29: At 3:02 am a deputy investigated a counterfeit $100 bill found in an inmate’s property. At 7:32 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1800 block of D Ave in Scranton Township. At 6:23 pm a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint in the 2200 block of R Ave in Franklin Township.at 8:17 pm a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on W Ave near 340th St in Washington Township. The driver fled and two subjects fled from the vehicle. The Dallas County and Boone County sheriff’s offices assisted with locating the two subjects. Anthony Kennedy, 37, of Rippey was located. Elisha Mischke, 39, of Des Moines was the passenger; she is wanted on Polk County warrants for theft- second degree and theft- fourth degree. She was not located.
Wednesday, Aug. 28: At 11:30 am the sheriff assisted the Winneshiek County sheriff’s office with trying to locate a suspect in Grand Junction. At 4:25 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Churdan. At 11:52 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Churdan.
Tuesday, Aug. 27: At 1:04 am a deputy investigated a single-vehicle accident on Highway 30 at R Ave east of Jefferson. Josefina Stevens, 72, of Jefferson struck a cow in the roadway with her 2010 Toyota Prius, totaling the vehicle. The cow, which is owned by Jonathan Merrill of Jefferson, was also a loss. Stevens was not injured in the accident. At 10:59 am the sheriff investigated a trespass complaint in the 700 block of B Ave in Kendrick Township.
Monday, Aug. 26: At 9:24 am a deputy assisted with a German shepherd that was found on 190th St near G Ave in Bristol Township. At 10:36 am the sheriff, a deputy, the Jefferson fire department at Greene County Ambulance assisted the Jefferson PD with a two-vehicle head-on collision on Highway 30 near Grimmell Road west of Jefferson. At 5:59 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Rippey. At 11:04 pm a deputy assisted the JPD with an arrest at the intersection of N. Elm St and Highway 30.
Sunday, Aug. 25: At 2:17 am a deputy investigated an assault in Grand Junction. At 2:54 am a deputy investigated a burglary in the area of the 500 block of R Ave in Dawson Township. At 11:13 am a deputy investigated a complaint of burglary in Grand Junction. At 5:59 pm a deputy investigated a burglary complaint in the 1100 block of 235th St west of Jefferson.
Saturday, Aug. 24: At 12:46 pm a deputy and K-9 assisted the Jefferson PD in the 1100 block of N Ave. At 3:24 pm a deputy assisted with recovered property in the 1600 block of M Ave west of Jefferson.

Thursday, Aug. 22: At 9:56 am a deputy investigated a phone scam reported from Scranton. At 11:56 am a deputy investigated a reported theft in Grand Junction. At 5:08 pm a deputy assisted with a report of cattle out in the area of Quaker St and 255th St in Grant Township. At 7:43 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Churdan. At 9:01 pm a deputy assisted with a report of cattle out in the 1900 block of 150th St in Paton Township. At 9:34 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Paton.
Wednesday, Aug. 21: At 12:09 pm a deputy investigated property recovered in Grand Junction. At 4:35 pm a deputy investigated an unattended juvenile in the 1600 block of 257th St in Grant Township. At 7:54 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Churdan. At 8:51 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Churdan. At 11:51 pm a deputy assisted with cattle on the roadway in the area of Highway 30 and R Ave east of Jefferson.
Tuesday, Aug. 20: At 2:35 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle rollover accident near the intersection of Highway 30 and Y Ave east of Grand Junction. A Boone County deputy was first at the scene and assisted. Dalton Zachariah Haggerty, 24, of Page, FL, was eastbound when he reached down for an item and lost control of his vehicle. The deputy noticed the vehicle had left tires marks in the south ditch, then it went across into the other lane and into the north ditch where it rolled onto its passenger’s side. The driver showed signs of intoxication and was arrested for suspicion of operating while intoxicated*. The vehicle was towed from the scene. Greene County Ambulance and Grand Junction fire and rescue assisted with the accident scene. Damage to Haggerty’s 2005 Ford F-150 truck was estimated at $14,000. At 8:58 am deputies assisted with a boat stuck in the river near Adkins river access. At 10:09 am a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in Scranton.
Monday, Aug. 19: At 12:16 am a deputy investigated an assault that took place in the 1100 block of L Ave in Bristol Township. Colton John Davis, 18, of Jefferson was arrested for assault*. At 11:47 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident at H Ave and County Road E-53 (240th St) in Scranton Township. Faith Rose Wiederin, 21, of Jefferson was westbound on E-53 when the steering wheel locked, causing her vehicle to cross into the eastbound lane. The vehicle came to rest after damaging a fence. Damage to the vehicle, a 2014 Chevrolet Impala, was estimated at $6,000. The property owner incurred an estimated $500 in damage. At 9:25 pm a deputy investigated a possible burglary in progress in Grand Junction.
Sunday, Aug. 18: At 10:50 am a deputy assisted with livestock in the 1100 block of County Road E-57 (290th St) in Greenbrier Township. Street. At 7 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Scranton.
Saturday, Aug. 17: At 5:07 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Paton. At 7:13 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Churdan. At 8:04 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction. At 11:29 pm a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 1500 block of Highway 4 south of Jefferson. Nathan Alexander Black, 16, of Jefferson was northbound when he swerved to the left to avoid striking a deer standing on the right portion of the roadway. Black entered the east ditch. Black was not injured. Damage to his 2009 Chevrolet Malibu was estimated t $7,000.
Friday, Aug. 16: At 10:48 am a deputy investigated a complaint of trespass in Grand Junction. At 10:49 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Paton. Rene Omar Guzman, 42 of Paton and Katarina Nichole Stilson, 22, of Paton were arrested for assault and disorderly conduct- fighting or violent behavior*.
Thursday, Aug. 15: At 7:56 am the sheriff and a deputy assisted the city of Paton with removing vehicles in the 200 block of Paton St per a court order. At 1 pm the sheriff, deputies, Carroll County deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Churdan rescue, fire departments from Jefferson, Scranton and Lanesboro and a Carroll County ambulance responded to a semi vs car accident on B Avenue and 140th St in Cedar Township. Jeffrey Bauer, 59, of Manning was southbound on B Ave driving a 2000 Kenworth semi tract0r-trailer. Michael Baugh, 33, of Panora was eastbound on 140th St driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Bauer failed to yield at the intersection and struck Baugh’s vehicle. After the impact the semi jackknifed in the roadway and the car entered the ditch and caught on fire. Bauer pulled Baugh from the vehicle. Baugh was taken by Carroll County Ambulance and later taken by air to another medical center with life threatening injuries. Bauer suffered minor injuries and was transported by Churdan rescue. Bauer was cited for failure to yield the right of way. The Iowa DOT investigated the semi tractor-trailer for defects. Baugh was cited for driving while license suspended, failure to have insurance, and a registration violation. Damage to Bauer’s rig was estimated at $18,000. Damage to Baugh’s vehicle exceeded value. At 2:30 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of animal neglect in Grand Junction. At 7:28 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction.
Wednesday, Aug. 14: At 8:10 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 252nd St near the bike trail.
Tuesday, Aug. 13: At 8:20 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 1700 block of F Ave in Jackson Township. At 10:50 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction.
Monday, Aug. 12: At 10:01 am a deputy investigated a theft in Scranton. At 2:20 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction. At 7:10 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a domestic assault complaint. At 7:10 pm a deputy assisted with cattle out on 252nd St near the bike trail south of Jefferson. At 8:19 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Grand Junction. At 9:40 pm a deputy arrested Michael Matthews, 23, of Grand Junction for an arrest warrant for a violation of probation*. At 11:38 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault on 190th St in Kendrick Township.
Sunday, Aug. 11: At 3:14 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with a accidental gunshot wound in the 200 block of E. Wilcox Way. At 2:49 pm a deputy and the Jefferson PD investigated an assault on a jailer by an inmate. At 6:18 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Scranton.
Saturday, Aug 10: At 4:18 am a deputy investigated a suspicious person on 337th St near W Ave in Washington Township. Luke Pettey, 27, of Ankeny for carrying weapons, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia*. At 7:54 pm a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with an arrest. At 8:56 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Churdan.
Friday, Aug. 9: At 10 am the sheriff arrested Christopher Quirk, 37, of Scranton at the courthouse after he was sentenced to prison. At 2:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 3:13 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 6:39 pm a deputy investigated an assault in Churdan. At 7:54 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 8:55 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 9:14 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction.
Thursday, Aug. 8: At 12:26 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 9:14 am a deputy investigated a single vehicle accident in the 1500 block of 252nd St in Grant Township. Dennis Ross, 74, of Jefferson struck a calf with his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado. There was no damage to the vehicle. At 12:32 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of theft in Rippey. At 3:05 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief in Grand Junction. At 10:33 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of harassment in Grand Junction. At 10:33 pm a deputy investigated suspicious activity in the 1200 block of Eaton Ave in Kendrick Township.
Wednesday, Aug. 7: At 4:08 am a deputy assisted with getting donkeys back into their fence on County Road N-65 (D Ave) near 177th St in Kendrick Township. At 7:50 am a deputy assisted with getting cattle back in the fence in the 1800 block of 305th St in Franklin Township.
Tuesday, Aug. 6: At 2 pm a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint on the north side of Scranton. At 6:02 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Scranton. At 7:49 pm a deputy investigated a motorcycle accident on 305th St at V Ave in Washington Township. David Alderson, 63, of Perry was going through a curve and hit gravel and lost control his 2003 Harley Davidson. Greene County Ambulance and Rippey fire responded. The driver was transported by personal vehicle with minor injuries. Damage to the motorcycle was estimated at $2,000.
Monday, Aug. 5: At 2:14 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson PD with locating some juveniles who ran. At 3:02 pm a deputy investigated an illegal dumping complaint in the 800 block of 230th St in Jackson Township. At 5:15 pm a deputy investigated a domestic assault in Grand Junction. Melynda Weltha, 43, of Grand Junction was arrested for domestic abuse assault- first offense*. While investigating the domestic deputies located stolen property. Weltha was also arrested for trespass and theft- fifth degree*. At 6:20 pm a deputy informed the owner of the above stolen property and returned it. The owner was unaware of the theft.
Sunday, Aug. 4: At 12:38 am a deputy assisted an Iowa state trooper with an arrest on Highway 30 near Hillcrest Ave west of Jefferson. Ethan Hammen, 22, of Mobile was arrested for operating while intoxicated*. Both passengers were also intoxicated and were taken to a hotel. At 3:51 am a deputy investigated a fire in the 300 block of T Ave in Dawson Township. The fire was a controlled burn. At 9:26 am a deputy investigated a complaint of criminal mischief at St Brigid Catholic Church in Grand Junction.
Saturday, Aug. 3: At 12:01 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with an arrest on Highway 4 near Highway 30. At 7:40 am a deputy assisted an Iowa state trooper with a traffic stop at County Road P-33 (S Ave) and Highway 30 west of Grand Junction. Kelvin Miller, 19, of Boone was arrested for driving 92 mph in a 55 zone, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance- first offense*. Thomas Dearden, 18, of Boone was arrested for possession of alcohol underage and possession of a controlled substance- first offense*. At 2:36 pm the sheriff investigated a motorcycle accident on U Ave near Rippey. The motorcycle driver had left the scene. At 4:41 pm an Iowa state trooper conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 near L Ave west of Jefferson. Mackenzie Simonsen, 20, of Walnut was charged with possession of alcohol underage and a .02 violation*. At 5 pm an Iowa State trooper conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 near M Ave west of Jefferson. Aletha Hoepner, 20, of Avoca and Dana Riley, 20, of Marion were cited for possession of alcohol underage*. At 8 pm a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson. The driver, Cody Bargman, 19, of Adel was cited for possession of alcohol underage*. One of the passengers, Austin Rekward, 20, of Ackley was also cited for possession of alcohol underage*. The second passenger was not drinking and was allowed to drive away.
Friday, Aug. 2: At 12:52 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 200 block of Pearl St in Farlin.
Thursday, Aug. 1: At 2:43 am a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 30 near Kirkwood Ave west of Jefferson. Jazmine Jones, 20, of Des Moines struck a deer with her 2019 Hyundi Santa Fe causing an estimated $3,000 damage to the vehicle. Jones was found to wanted out of Polk County for possession of a controlled substance. She was later booked into the Greene County jail on the warrant. At 7:50 am a deputy investigated a semi hauling gravel that spilled its load on Highway 4 just north of 190th St three miles north of Jefferson. The gravel was cleaned up by the Iowa DOT, Webster County secondary roads, and Greene County secondary roads. The semi was hauling gravel for Webster County. At 10 am deputies assisted the Guthrie County sheriff’s office with search warrants in Bayard. At 8:41 pm a deputy investigated a theft in Scranton. At 8:49 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on Highway 4 (140th St) just east of J Ave east of Churdan. Abigail Brend, 30, of Madrid struck a deer with her 2015 Dodge Durango, causing an estimated $1,000 damage to the vehicle.
*In all cases when a defendant has been charged this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
